Combining AVCHD video files with P2 audio files in Premiere Pro CS4 or CS5?

Hey everyone. I just started shooting with a GH1 and I am using my HPX170 for monitering and capturing sound since I can't afford a Zoom H4N right now. Is it possible to open up Premiere Pro CS4 or CS5 and start a project in the AVCHD preset and drop my AVCHD video files onto the timeline and import my P2 video/audio files into the same timeline to synch up the sound with the video? I am shooting 24pn on both cameras. By the way, I don't want to transcode the AVCHD files into DVC Pro files because of the quality loss.

So, you can drop P2 video/audio files into the AVCHD preset and synch those up with AVCHD Native 24p video files in the same timeline with no problems? Will there be any frame rate issues between the P2 files and the AVCHD files if the P2 footage was shot at 1080 24p Advanced and the AVCHD footage was shot at 1080 24p Native? Sorry, I just want to make sure before I shoot anymore footage like this.

Audio doesn't have a frame rate. Audio has a sampling rate, which on the P2 camera will be 48000 cycles per second. That's the same as for the AVCHD preset, so you really shouldn't have any issues. Best to just try it though.

This really sounds like what I'm doing. I had CS4 but recently upgraded to CS5 and I own a GH1 but have borrowed an HVX200A for a couple of my projects for multicam shoots and the audio comes out of the HVX200A.

I have no problems at all putting both on the time line and syncing it up.

The H4N is also something I'm considering but for slightly under $100 I have my eye on the H1. Theirs unfortunately no XLR inputs but that price is hard to resist. I mean you really can't complain and it would go great with my GH1.

Hahaha! Yeah, that's EXACTLY what I have in mind except, I want to get the $300 (ouch!) H4N and nothing else. Hey, Camera Expert, you might want to check out this Vimeo link:

It looks like the H4N's audio out and headphone monitoring are on the same jack. The guy in the video took a "Y" cable and hooked it up to the audio out on the H4N so he can record to the camera and monitor with headphones at the same time. I don't know why Zoom would set up the H4N like that because the H2 has separate audio out and headphone jacks. ??? Too bad there's no way to program the H4N to record audio when you hit the record button on the GH1... now that would make me go right out and buy it tomorrow if it could do that!

Hey Camera Expert, one more and then I'm going to start charging you. If you don't know about it already, Singular Software makes this program called Plural Eyes that automatically sync's your video and audio footage for you in Premiere Pro CS 5 and its free to use for 60 days. Of course, its the BETA version but, it wouldn't hurt to test it out:

I haven't tried it out since I don't have Premiere Pro CS5 yet.
