combining a wireless lapel mike with a shure 58

I am going to be filming a live screening of my film this weekend with someone speaking in front of the screen to a live audience. I just purchased a Shure PGX4 wireless lapel mic that would be connected to my DVX 100B for recording. He will also be standing in front of Shure 58 mic on a stand so the audience will hear him. Should I be concerned about feedback or any complications with this audio set up?

Also, I haven't used the mic yet so how far back can I set the camera to get a good recording level?

Thanks very much,

Enrico

... Are you trying to use the lapel mic on the camera?

As far as feedback though, just make sure the the speakers are not facing in the direction of the microphones. (Generally the speakers are in front of where the mic is placed)

So the 58 is hooked up to the PA and then the lav is for the video? Apart from the non-stellar quality of the mics that come with the PG stuff, you should be fine. Just don't setup the 58 right in front of a speaker.

As long as your wireless is not also feeding into the PA system along with the SM58, there shouldn't be any feedback issues just from the mics being close together. (For that matter, even if they were, assuming a semi-competent board operator, it shouldn't be an issue either, but I have talked to a lot of people over the years that are all kinds of worried about it for some reason.)

And assuming you're talking about the range of the PGX transmitter when you ask how far back you can set the camera... the PGX is, shall we say, a "budget" system. It at least has external antennas, unlike Shure's cheapest system, the PG, but I have not been impressed with the range of Shure systems in general lately. I've never used the PGX, but I have a lot of experience with the older UC series and the current SLX series, and I don't trust either past about 75 feet--and I feel a lot better at 50. Of course, 75 feet is too far for a DVX to zoom in properly on a single person, so at reasonable shooting distances, you should be OK... but as always, your mileage may vary... :)

Thank you. The direction of the speakers hopefully won't be an issue because the Theatre commonly uses that set up for Q&A's following film screenings. I was concerned with the proximity of the wireless to the SM 58 because it will probably be around his collar and close to the mic stand.

At this screening, someone will be introducing the feature film and there will be a short silent film behind him which I would like to film together.

Never having heard the PGX4 before, does it deliver a sound good enough to fix in post?

I appreciate your replies,

Enrico

Interaction of the two mics should only be an issue if you're running both to the PA. I don't know exactly which mic you got, but the PG-series stuff is Shure's entry-level line. It's still good quality, but it's nowhere near their higher end stuff.
