Combining 23.98 and 29.97 sources in a 23.97 timeline

I am editing a video that draws from two video sources with alternate frame rates on a 23.97 timeline in Final Cut Pro. The two sources are as follows:
1) 23.97 video (shot as 24p on dvx100a) - this footage runs well on the 23.97 timeline as it was previously processed with Cinema Tools Reverse Telecine.
2) 29.97 video (shot on a sony camcord)

How can I alter the second source (29.97) to edit it on the 23.97 timeline? Is there a process in Cinema Tools that will convert a 29.97 source to a 23.97 timeline? Thanks.

I too would like to know the solution. I am in the same dilema as you and would like to mix 29.97 footage with 24pa footage on a 23.97 timeline. The 24pa footage looks fine. But if a I drop 29.97 footage (not shot 24p <--- Notice not 24pA!) meaing footage shot at 60i, the results I am getting are jerky/stroby looking video. Even if I use Cinema Tools to conform it I'll get unusable footage, unless of course you like that stroby effect.

Anyone what we're doing wrong here?

You'll need to use the Natress filters or some other plugin/program to convert 60 -> 24 to get a reasonable result.

If your end result doesn't truly need to be at 24fps then the easiest is to bump your 24fps footage to 60i. Even easier if you know you have to combine 24 and 60i is to shoot 24p (not 24pa) at the start and don't remove pulldown (reverse telecine).
This will cut directly in your 29.97 timeline and still look like 24fps footage. no additional plugins or processing needed.

Ah! That makes sense. Thanks. The only thing I don't understand is the 'bumping' the 24p footage to 60i. Wouldn't that stretch or create new frames and make it so it doesn't line up correctly? I think I tried this and noticed that it actually sped up the footage.

I do have natress film effects filters and can convert the 60i footage to 24p. I'll give it a try and see how it looks. Thanks again.

24 -> 60i is done by adding pulldown, same as when movie films are transferred to tape.
You gain extra frames but the look of motion is the same and you don't lose information as you do goign 60 -> 24.

Thanks a lot!

Thanks a lot!

Graeme_Nattress and Scottdvx100 - thank you both for the feedback. I will go ahead with using Natress. Thanks a lot for your help.

What about using 24p(29.97fps) footage on a 23.98 timeline? Meaning mixing DVX100a shot 24p and 24pa footage on a 23.98 timeline?

Remove the pulldown from the 24p and then it's 23.98 and can be intercut with 24pa footage that's had it's pulldown removed. Same thign at that point, jsut different pulldown removal processes.

24p is 23.98fps though. 24pA goes straight onto a 23.98fps timeline. for 24p you need to remove pulldown first, in, say, cinema tools.

Thank you for your feedback about converting 60i to a 23.97 timeline. I have since installed Standard Conversion plugins and am currently trying to work with them in FCP, however I am not familiar with the language used by the Filters... Everytime I apply the G Film Converter V2.5.2, the FCP Viewer and/or Slug displays the following in bright green text: "Drop Clip in Source Well to Convert". What is a "source well" in FCP?
