Combine Footage from Different Projects

I want to put together a reel, combining several scenes from different projects.

Each of these scenes contains multiple video and audio layers.

My question is, how do I select a scene from a sequence and copy it into a new project?

Also, at times I want to copy the scene, but not all of the audio layers, how can I do that without having to rebuild the scene?

Thanks,

Chris

Just copy and paste. Highlight all the clips (as many or as few tracks as you like) you want to move over and use the copy command. Then go to your new reel sequence, put the playhead where you want it to be, and paste the stuff in. It will all move over with everything intact and distrusted the same was as you had before. The paste function is an overwrite function. I'm not sure if you hold down option if it will become an insert function instead (not at work, so no access to FCP right now).

cheers.

I just tried it. However, it will only let me paste from the beginning of a clip to the end of a clip. What if I want to start in the middle of a clip and end in the middle of a clip.

Is there a way to mark an in and an out and just copy that section?

Grab the blade down and run and up and down the tracks using it. Then when you select your desired clips you can have a in point and out point part way through clips that you originally had play out longer in the original project.

cheers.

yea i was just about to suggest the blade tool. you can also just copy and paste the whole sequence and once you paste it into the new sequence just use the blade tool and chop it up there rather than messing with the original sequence.

how would you copy and paste sequences from different projects and put them on one timeline if they were all recorded at different resolutions though? 1080, 720, etc.

Mickey,

You'd do the same thing, but just decide what you wanted your final output to be. So create a sequence with all the settings necessary for you final desired output, then just bring the clips into that. Any that don't match the sequence settings will require a render though.

The other option is, put them onto that sequence like I described above. Then the ones that require a render, make them offline (you can use the leave on disk option if you don't want to delete them and wreck your original project). Then use a good deck or capture card to re-digitize them to conform to the sequence settings you've settled on. Just make sure the new sequence is also in a new project so it will have a different file name and thus different/unique capture scratch folder (so it can use the same media file names but not interfere with the other/original project).

If possible I would prefer to use a card/VTR to do the converting, but if in a pinch, you can just do a render and let FCP handle it (the results might just not be quite as good).

cheers.
