Colour not opening the sequence properly?

Hm okay I just finished editing a music video on my Mac Pro in FCP and I dont know how to use Colour so I had a few guys come over today to do the colour correction on my computer.

When they tried to send the sequence to Colour, for one thing, it took kinda a long time to open in Colour even tho I have 10.5 GIG of RAM, and also, when it opened, it seemed to be starting from like, the middle of the sequence.

The footage was also jittery at times, and just kinda messed up. like i'd see bits of scenes that werent in the music video for the final edit.. i don't really get it.....

we ended up sending the footage to a tape and he's gonna take it home to look at it but I really wanna figure out why that happened and also why my computer seems to be rendering and operating slower than other computers that half less than half the ram I do... my computer is a Mac Pro dual 2.3 gz processor 10.5 gigs OSX 10.4.11 final cut studio 2, external hard drive used for scratch disk.....

*exhausted*

I have no idea, but FWIW... ram should be in matched pairs. 10.5 gigs is really (REALLY!) an odd config.

I'd got with 4 2 gig chips or something matched.

Are you using a codec that is okay to use w/Color and did you properly prep your FCP sequence before sending it to Color?

well the guy that was doing moved all my clips onto one track (i had them on 21 diff vid tracks before) and removed all the filters i had added. So i assume thats what you do to properly prep the sequence before sending it to color? he showed me an example of him opening one of his projects on his laptop in colour and it worked fine so i'm sure he knows how to do it.. he thinks something is messed up on my computer.. i just dont know what it could be!!

as for the codec well i assume you are talking about it being ntsc ??? it's 24pA footage in a 23.98 sequence if that makes a difference??

i'm so confused..

If the guy is familiar w/Color then he probably knows how to make sure the sequence is kosher (clips w/speed changes on them are also no-no's). As a test have you tried creating a new FCP project, dropping in some media into the timeline and exporting that? Also, sometimes the Send to Color command is wonky and you need to export an XML from FCP and open it up in Color.

there ARE some clips in there that were made into slow motion using Motion. he said that was fine BUT are you saying that is incorrect???????? perhaps he was making an assumption... altho it doesnt really explain why the sequence seems to start in the MIDDLE when it opens in Colour..

we tried the xml but i dont think we tried creating a new project.. gonna try that now and see what happens.... thanks for trying to help adkimery, hopefully we figure this out soon.... i kinda wanna learn how to use Colour too....

Clips that are speed adjusted inside FCP are a no-no, but sending a clip to Motion, speeding it up/down, exporting it and then bringing it back should be okay because the effect is 'baked in'. Hopefully you guys can track the problem down soon. Color is a powerful app, but it is very, very finicky in its current state and has lots of 'gotchas' (some listed in the manual, some not).

i had some color issues a few months ago.
apparently there were some bugs that were fixed with an update.

wow i hope we don't have a bug.. well i made a new test project with like 3 clips, sent it to colour and it worked just fine.

Is there a bug for projects longer than 15 seconds or something?? arggg. also i noticed that every clip in colour starts of with a jitter then plays through..... weird.....

The original project, or sequence, could be corrupt and that could be causing the problems. Try copy and pasting the contents from your original sequence into a sequence created in a new project and see if that works.

yeah, i tried copying the sequence and pasting it into a new project. same thing. in fact i tried sending OLD projects to Colour as well and got the same problem. the only time i've been successful is when i made a few test sequences with only 2 or 3 clips, but even then, the clips each start of with a jitter.

Do you think my copy of Colour has a bug? I purchased my computer used with the final cut studio 2 already installed so if that is the case it would suck cuz I wouldnt have a way to get it fixed I assume....

I can't think of a way around this. We are getting close to just using the Color Correcter 3 way filter and possibly some Magic Bullet Looks if my friend can get it installed on my computer alright.

So frustrating!!!!!

oh, no. good idea... i remember trashing my preferences for FCP fixed a problem i had a long time ago, i just didnt know you could do the same thing for Color.. *googles how to trash Color prefs*

arg. trashed the color pref file and tried again and got the exact same problem. it's as if it's reading the time code all messed up or something. it imports all 300 some odd clips into Color, but in the time line it plays through only TWO of the clips, and they're just two random clips from the middle of the video... and all jittery..... darn it.. i was hoping that would fix it....
