Colour Grading

Re: Colour Grading

Color grading can only do so much. It's more on the lines (IMO) of choosing a specific film stock. Badly shot footage will look bad regardless of how you mess with the colors and exposure can only be tweaked so much. You only have as much information as you capture initially with your camera anyway...

Re: Colour Grading

monte- did you achieve those images your posted through your NLE? if so, which one?

Re: Colour Grading

All done in vegas, with a 3 way color corrector and a more selective secondary color corrector.

I'm sure if you're a mac user, FCP has something quite similar.

Re: Colour Grading

right. FCP has the same thing and more.
I was thinking that when you watch the LOTR dvd's the DP is sitting right next to the color grader guy. so I imagine that the DP aids alot in the work of the color grader as the grader offers solutions. But yes, credits should go where it's due.

Re: Colour Grading

A DP would not be worth his or her weight is salt if they were not at the grading sessions. It just seems odd that we are all so used to saying "oh the cinematography was great in that film" When in fact with out the grading it would just be an average looking flick. The process is very apealing to my eye. It does some very wonderful things, just does not soley hinge on a wonderful DP.
