You have to find some way of isolating the object you're talking about. Here's the basic process:

-> Drop two copies of your footage on the timeline, one in Video1, the other in Video2
-> Apply a black-and-white effect to the clip on the top
-> Isolate the relevant object in the top layer and key it out (making it transparent and letting it show through to the colored version of itself below).

The hard part, of course, is step 3. You may have to do it frame-by-fram by hand in Photoshop, which is of course going to be gruelling. But you might be able to use a Chroma key (Effects>Keying>Chroma Key) if the object is the only thing in the whole scene that's that colour:

- Start with two copies of your clip (Video 1 and Video 2), with no effects applied
- Drop a Chroma Key effect onto your top clip
- Use the eye dropper in the chroma key's effects controls to select the colour of the object you want
- Now, to get your key right, hide Video 1. Play with the settings on the Chroma Key (on Video 2) until you can see through the object (ie it's replaced by blackness)
- Drop a Black and White filter on the Video 1 clip, making sure it comes *below* the Chroma Key in the list of effects for that clip
- show Video 1 again.

Video 2, the black and white clip, will now show through to the colour clip in the parts that are the proper colour. You can keep adjusting the settings in the chroma key filter until you achieve the desired effect. It needs to be a really bold, really saturated color for it to work... try something like Similarity of 10 and 0 for the other settings.

Keep in mind that this is a very difficult technique to accomplish and requires a great deal of planning (or blind luck) in the shooting phase to make sure that nothing else in the scene is close enough to the color to get caught by the chroma key.

thanks a lot overnighttolondon

Vikas,
Does the object that you want to colorize have an unique color in the scene? If so, another approach would be to use a color correction tool that has secondary color correction. With secondary color correction you can select the specific color that the object has and control it while desaturating the rest of the scene.

The Color Finesse plugin that comes with After Effects has this ability. The new color correction tool in PPro 2 can do secondary color correction. But like I said, this will only work in specific cases. If the object is shiny, reflections on the object can cause problems too.
