Color Suite...

Hi guys, dunno if this is the right place, I put it in AE cause this is what I usually use to finish and render. I'm looking at a job where I have to be a colorist. This is a big step up from how I work, which is all soft and in AE, for an SD finish.

I was asked to learn Da Vinci resolve and put together (research and come up with) a system for a 2K finishing suite. The guys working with me are starting up an fx house and they need a colorist. Lots of 3D lots of compositing, my thing is to color and finish and render.

I have been looking around for a week and the possibilities are crazy confusing. I still don't know exactly how this is supposed to work, but my idea is:

A computer. Fast disk speed, since I'm a macuser, I'm thinking thunderbolt expansion options instead of a tower. I would run Da Vinci to 'impress the clients' and AE for my sake cause I'm comfortable that way.

I imagine I would need a card capable of outputting a ten bit signal to a monitor. I see so far the only thunderbolt compliant devices are made by Matrox? but I can't pick features I don't know how they work, or what to look for.

I can't pick monitors to save my life. I don't know a thing about this and the options are equally overwhelming. I know I will need to work with 10-bit footage. We'll be getting a lot of R3D's, and the rest will be 3D generated stuff I can imagine it can be exported at high bit depths.

Is that the basic skeleton of a system? Computer/workstation - Card - Monitor? I need some advice, I know I have to read but I am. It is just overwhelming, very noob here.

This rig has to be somewhat impressive, albeit on a 5-7500 budget. I have no clue if this is possible. Where I live is very concerned with gear etc, hence AE is never good enough for a client therefore must learn resolve. Already picked up some reading on the software, as well as brushing up on workspaces etc.

I beileve we will need to accomodate for a film print option, I would like to get this started where I am, I have been setting up test projects in film workspace, simulating output for kodak vision, then flipping back to a rec709 sim for output preview for web and tv.

I dunno if this makes sense. But this is the deal. I have 5 grand. I need to pick a coloring suite out that revolves around resolve. (giggle, revolves around resolve... blew beaumonts .. brains out ahahaha)

Is it just computer card monitor? Am I missing anything? Simple guidance, tried and tested gear and approaches would be helpful to look at.

Thanks all. Mods again if this is the wrong place, please tell me or do what you gotta do I just can't seem to find a coloring subforum.

Resolve is $1000 just for the software. A color suite without a control surface will look sissy and not quality as being "impressive". The cheapest Resolve SW + low-end control surface is around $2500. So that leaves $2,500 for the computer and everything else?

A 24" color calibrated monitor runs about $3000 by itself. The budget isn't realistic at all.

Hey Snazzy, it's why I'm asking... the guys are cool, but we don't have much of an idea. Ned's monitor is hooked up to a mojo and its a CRT at 9 inches. I honestly don't know. if it isn't realistic I can tell them that.

So we're talking resolve, a control surface, a color calibrated monitor, still a card? Am I working in 10 bit here? Again I'm so sorry for the abject ignorance I have on the subject but I've been doing what I feel is pointless research.

I need this help, that was quite a helpful post. Can you elaborate?

Am googling stuff as we speak. Monitors and such.

Thanks again man I know these threads aren't cool where it seems like I'm looking for an easy answer. And if it were up to me I wouldn't go surface/24" etc I never wanted to 'look' impressive. But this is not about me.

So 5,000 is not realistic at all... 10,000?

Ok looking through I think the guys will have to settle for a control surface-less da vinci. That thing is crazy.

I saw a few monitors that look alright, prticularly the hp dreamcolor, and the aja io xt looks like a nice thunderbolt solution.

Other than resolve and scratch, are there other platform out there that are reliable color correction suites? I think if I mention colorista II I'll get hanged.

Man that is awesome. I'm gonna be on this subject intensively till about the end of Jan. Thanks so much Snazzy
