Color smoothing 4:1:1 not rendering.

OK so I have been working on fixing the blocky bleeding reds from my DVX100B SD footage, and I get fantastic results by applying the "color smoothing 4:1:1" under the "key" video effects. Plays beautifully in the browser. Then I take it to the timeline and get the red render bar. However, after I render the clip in the timeline, the effect is no longer there. It just seems to revert back to look like the original clip. So: the effect is applied, and upon rendering disappears. (I can still see the effect in the master clip in the browser bin.) I thought it might just be the playback in canvas but I exported to Quicktime conversion and sure enough there is no color smoothing 4:1:1 rendered in the finished product. Any help would be appreciated. I'm on a new Macbook Pro using a 7200 RPM external drive, and I have had no problems like this up to now.

I think you need to apply the effect when the clip is in the timeline, not when it's in the browser? Not sure why you would apply it to the master clip? If you are worried about having to apply it to multiple clips you can just select all and paste the filter any other clip when you tweak it how you want it.

If it's DV, and your dropping it back in a DV timeline, when you render, you are rendering back to 4:1:1 again - because DV is 4:1:1 - that is the codec

You need to make a ProRez, uncompressed, Animation, or even, on a lark, a DVCPRO50 sequence, drop your footage in that, then apply the filter. You're going to need a decent speed computer and, ideally, at least a 2 drive striped raid (like G-Tech at FW800) to playback at full speed.

I did that too, sorry for the confusion. And many other variations.

Just to do "color smoothing 4:1:1"? Really? I can see it play back with the effect in the viewer window just fine. It's just after I render it plays back in canvas without the effect, and it exports out to movie without the effect.

I think I asked this question completely wrong, sorry y'all. All that is going on is, when I try to render with a "color smoothing 4:1:1" effect, it acts like it's rendering the clip but nothing happens to the footage, no effect.

UPDATE: OK sorry rookie mistake, I see the Apple ProRez codec setting, thanks!

If you are just trying to get rid of the 'blochy bleeding reds', try a chroma blur filter. I also shoot with a DVX100B and run into the problem of those pesky reds. I usually go with the chroma blur filter from Nattress ($99....i think). However, once applied you will need to render for real-time playback.

You can see an example here....as one of the actors wore RED satin pajamas

Hope this helps

DV50 Does Great

DV50 Does Great

I'm working on a fashion show in DV with lots of red dresses and fighting the blocky reds. Dropping all the footage on a DV50 timeline and applying Color Smoothing to the clips did the trick without too much rendering fuss. Thanks for the tip.

The reason it has an effect in the Viewer window is because the Viewer plays back the clip 'as is' (in this case DV treated w/the color smoothing filter). When you drop a clip into the timeline and watch it in the Canvas what you are seeing is the clip after it's been processed by whatever codec the timeline is set to.
