Color Pass

I want to do an effect where an actor gives a rose to a girl, and the whole scene is black and white except for the rose. But as the girl accepts the rose suddenly color returns to the scene. I don't want the color to return all at once but rather spread out from the girl's hand and then across the entire shot. If it's a static shot with a locked down camera what is the way to do this in After Effect? I use version 6.5 Pro.

make two layers: one in black and white, one in color. The one in color on top.
Make a mask in the color layer that only contains the rose at first. Keyframe mask boundaries to spread out to the edges in manner you want. You can use feather to make the edges softer.
