Color equipment

Hi ALL;

Can any of you guys help? I about to purchase a macbook pro however budget is an issue. So will it be possible for a 15" macbook pro with and apple monitor to take advantage of color.

Thanks for you help

Would it make a difference If i used the apple monitor as the primary display and not the laptop's monitor when doing my color correcting.

I think you would be better off saving up for a professional HD broadcast monitor than going with the apple monitor.

Thanks for you reply, however where I'm located HD will not be in demand for while. With that being said, I still used SD video but most of my finish worked is color corrected, hence my concern with the equipment I'm getting.

The easy answer is: Yes

Before the AJA i/o or the new MOTU thingy is here, it is as far as i know not very easy to connect a broadcast monitor to a MBP...

Just want to clarify:

The 15" 2.4 MacBook Pros can be opened and used without any other display attached? I was told it couldn't open the program at all because it didn't support screen resolution. Is this not the case? Can you use the 15" to do rough CC tests in the field to see if the image will hold up or not, without a minimum resolution monitor attached?

Yes, you can run Color on a MacBook Pro. I've personally have seen it at the Apple store. This was on the MacBook Pro that has 256MB graphics. The playback was pretty good on that graphics card.

And Yes, this was without an external monitor.

I just opened Color on my first generation MacBook Pro 15" with the 128 meg video card. Color was designed to operate on a large screen so running it on a 15" is not going to be a great experience but it will open.

When we say large screen we aren't kidding. Final touch (the app that Color was) wanted dual 30" monitors. The closer you can get to that the better your experience will likely be. Though from my quick check it looks like Apple has made it poss to run on a lot less real-estate, but just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Thanks Noiz2 and Mally. I figured the 17", even at the higher res, wouldn't be good enough anyways, so I'm going to opt for portability over screen real estate with the 15" (now that I know-thanks again).

Jeez, dual 30" monitors- all my TVs since childhood growing up won't add up to all that.

Interesting note: I find that the playback in Color is actually smoother on the MacBook Pros' 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT card than it is on the NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT which is the stock card that comes with the desktop Mac Pro.

I run color on prores files on a 1st gen mbp, BUT I use an extra display whenever I'm not totally lost in the bush...

Thanks for the input guys. I feel safe ordering the 15" + FCS2 combo now.

So I finally take the plunge to Mac- it's supposed to have like one mouse button or something right? Boo. :)

The laptops still only have one button but Macs as a whole have gotten over that stupidity. One thing that I missed from Windowz (contextual menus) is now all over the Mac. I had unlearned using them and so was a bit put off like many Mac users but it's like riding a bike... Anyway the new Mac mouses look like they only have one button but they really have three or four, and two way scroll.

You might want to read the thread about some video problems with FCP and MBP's to make sure this won't piss you off.
