Color Correction

Hey all,

Quick questions: (the most common phrase on this site I think)

Just so no one yells at me I DID do a search through the discussion archives of the site and found little help.

I am color correcting my footage...I know - bad idea, lose quality, down grade image, go to dvxuser hell...

So I'm color correcting my footage and it is such a monotonous task because I have to do it frame by frame.

Leading me to my questions: Is there any way to apply the color correction I've done to multiple frames? Is there any reason this is a really bad idea? As long as everything was shot in the same setting the color correction should apply to just about everything right?

Thanks

Looking forward to your response and, as always, the sarcastic, scathing, but ultimately friendly rebukes of the veterans.

Frame by frame!!???? why the hell do you have to do it frame by frame?

In your timeline, double click on the entire clip that you want to CC, then go to effects> video filters> color correction> three way color corrector> then work your magic (I'd advise "levels" before three way color corrector). It'll apply to the entire clip you have selected.

Now, if you have a similar clip that you want to add basically the same CC to... click on the already CC'd clip in your timeline> apple "C" to copy the clip> find the clip you want to add it to in your timeline> "control" click on the clip> paste attributes> filters. Now you have the exact same effects and filters on the new clip that you worked so hard on in the first one. Then you can double click the clip, and tweak all the CC to your needs in the "viewer" under the filters tab.

p.s. 99% of people color correct their footage, and it's a GOOD idea.

Frame by frame? If you're doing this in FCP I assume you mean clip by clip.
That said, you can copy and past your color corrector or your 3-way color corrector filters (as you can with any filter) to any clip you like. So if you have several clips that you want to use the color correction on, copy and paste is the simple answer. There are some options for pasting one clip forward or two clips forward.

Let me also recommend this book:

It'll help with all things FCP

Was this directed at ME???

As the others have said... if frame by frame you mean clip by clip... then it's not a stupid question and you've at least done your homework so there's no need for ME to yell...

Remember -- editing is probably the fastest thing you should do in Post Production. The end game is the hardest.

But as for workflow -- you DO want to be using similar CC settings across shots... make sure you've got your waveform scopes up so you can compare. Use the tripple up window setting to have one window as your comparison window... you can even split that screen easy to show both corrections to match.

Check out the CC section of the manual and you'll get some good insight to this workflow.

I didn't get that? Editing is the fastest? I always thought "take your time" "don't rush it" and all that.

I was talking frame by frame, still getting down the jargon.

Thanks for you help

Frame by Frame... you should be going clip by clip... that's how the filter should be added. No reason to chop up and try it frame by frame.

As for my quote... more or less it was a figure of speech... What I really meant was, if you think you are taking your time on editing, you should even slow yourself down MORE to do the finishing work. There are no quick fixes for something to look good. Color correction will take time. Do it right.
