Color correction using laptop?

I'm considering getting the new MacbookPro laptop and using it both for production in the field and postproduction in the studio (until the Intel PowerMacs are released later this year). The laptop has a DVI port (via an ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 graphics card). I have a Sony PVM series CRT monitor that I use for color correction and it accepts an HD component signal. I'd like to connect the laptop to the monitor somehow and do color correction, such as by using the Final Cut Pro Cinema Desktop function. Video cards aren't an option for laptops. Would I be able to use an ATI DVI-to-component adapter? I don't understand how a $20 part with no power input is going to perform digital-to-analog conversion at HDTV throughput, and do it well enough that I'm confident in the color grading. Has anyone used one of these adapters before? Any thoughts or insights would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jeremy
