color correction in 9 and 11

I haven't really done much color correction since I set my hvx200 up to the look I wanted during filming and playback but now I'm playing with the 5d mkiii and will need to color correct the footage. I have look at the choices that Vegas Pro has to offer and really not sure which is the best route to go (Color Balance, Color Corrector, Secondary, curves etc...) or if I need to go with an after market software?

My vote is for After Effects with Colorista 2 or Colorista Free (which is free). I used to CC in Vegas all the time, but once I started mastering in AE, I never looked back. The way Colorista handles color I think is unmatched.

I should add that if you go this route, PM your email and I can send you an AE script that will take an EDL from Vegas and import all your cuts and fades effortlessly without rendering.

Choice of tool depends on what you want to do.

FBMN software has a great white balance plug in that has actually done away with a lot of the color correction we were doing. It is less than fifty bucks and that along with their exposure plugin are two of the best purchases we have ever made.

Yep! A very nice grade can be done in Vegas (especially when time and processing power lack). I usually go with curves first, followed by the 3 point corrector, and then sometimes a secondary. Resolve lite is better (and free) if you have the time and expertise.

i use vegas 9 for my hvx footage and AAF for my canon mov footage. you know vegas and mov don't see eye to eye.....

The newer versions of Vegas handle h.264 mov files pretty well. You'll just need to drop the Computer RGB to Studio RGB preset onto the clips for correct grading.
