Color Correction & Color Grading

Good morning,

I'm curious to know what the difference is between color correction and color grading. I've seen both referred to in these forums as though they are different processes.

Near as I can tell, 'color correction' is the process of getting colors balance and match from clip to clip while 'color grading' is the process of providing your entire sequence with a 'look'; similar to what might be done with Magic Bullet.

Am I even close on this?

Cheers,

John

From what I know thats exactly right. CC is for matching and making the colors, well... correct. And grading applies a look or feel. Pretty much just what you said :)

eta - sometimes you will see the two terms misused. Color timing is an older term that I believe is synonymous with color correction. But I may be wrong...

In truth they are fairly interchangeable. Although I've noted that when someone starts talking about color grading it's typically going to be more expensive...

A color correction is an adjustment, whether it be a primary (across the entire image) or secondary (selective). A color grade is the sum of all the different applied color corrections. The terms are not interchangeable.
