color correction and monitors, again.

The Matrox guys certainly found a way to make an Apple LCD perfectly match the Panasonic 1700. I guess the question is did they properly calibrate the Panny and then work the profile on the Apple to match, (which should allow one to properly color correct with the Apple), or did they set the Apple and then match the Panasonic to it for demo purposes. I'm certainly not accusing them of anything sinister but it would be nice if there was an established workflow that one could use to get their LCD properly calibrated without having to own a decent HD broadcast monitor to use as a reference.(I know, I can see the raised eyebrows out there as I say that!)

I think I'll review the MXO forum tonight and see if this question has come up. Maybe once Shane has a chance to experiment with his he'll have some suggestions.

for those of you who are interested...
The folks at Matrox are helpful, but they should face the facts their product is a bit buggy..the screen calibration remains an issue.
But with all of that aside..I think this is going to be my solution for home color CC.
I have my apple 20"screen, and a little trintron TV hooked up to it. The image is very close..I would even say identical, noting that the TV is much smaller so it's more contrasty.
It took me the entire day to get it all up correctly. For final screen calibration I tried the Huey, but to be honest I did better just calibrating the screen with the color sync tool. The huey was off.

I have been playing around with my setup as well. I started by loading the MXO profile and then ran my eye-one on it with those settings. The gamma now looks pretty close to my video monitor (which I set up using the pluge bars). My problem is the ACD is looking a tad warmer then the sony video LCD and the sony has a bit of a red bias. Unfortunately the Sony doesn't seem to have any hue controls while connected via component so I'm kind of screwed there. I seem to have lost my my monitor screen calibration controls via monitors/system prefs so I'm not sure at this point how I can adjust the color bias of the ACD if I needed too. Is that color sync tool a separate app?

DV rack has it, DV monitor can do it, why has no one come up with a small application that mimics color bars and blue-gun to calibrate lcd monitors. Even if it only gets you in to the ball park????

final cut pro has bars when you print to video...(my friend in iceland)...the problem is that you cannot adjust the acd screen at the same time...you cannot realy calibrate the acd like you would a color monitor..
there is a really basic tool called GAMMAWORK that will let you do it, but its too hard to use. just BUY the Matrox...its gonna work..and hopefully those guys will come up with some better soft soon.

Im actually talking about a color bar setup + blue gunb simulation component as is in DV rack.:Drogar-Smoke(DBG):

I believe DVRack is PC only so no good for us Mac users but you're right, that's what we need. I saw a DVRack type app for the Mac on REDROCK's website a while back but I don't believe they ever actually released it. The MXO get's you close and if you do own a broadcast monitor it's a great way to view HDV in real time without having to conform.

Broadcast LCD's like Panasonic's are just perfect for for this application, I'm just waiting for the HD versions to come down in price a little.

You can use FCP's bars and the calibration assistant at the same time just to make sure you're not getting too far off base. Bars and Tone are available from the viewer pulldown(looks like an A over a single frame of film) or from the effects tab>video generators. You wont get fullscreen but the theory is the same. You can move the window to any display you have connected. Good Luck.
