Color Correction Advice

Maybe you guys can help me out with this difficult problem I seem to be having. I really want to learn how to color correct my footage properly, I have been having a lot of problems trying to mess around with my 3 wheel color corrector in Vegas pro. Everything I try looks horrible for some reason.

I understand that lighting your footage plays a big part when color correcting and my footage is properly exposed before I even start color correcting. I check everything on my vectorscope and waveform monitor to make sure everything is legal. Maybe it’s because I need to learn the basics of color correcting.

I looked around trying to find books /dvd’s that can teach color correcting and I cannot seem to find any, maybe if you guys know of any recommendations I will appreciate it a lot. I was also wondering if it is better for me to learn color correction in after effects vs. sony vegas pro I ask because I see a lot of people doing a lot of awesome things inside of after effects with the compositing and what not.

I do own magic bullet but the render times take for ever and I am sure there will be a way to create most of those looks in post with just the color correctin tools inside of after effects. Any help will be appreciated, I am really trying to get a hold of how to accomplish this task maybe you can share your tips and tricks.

By the way I am shooting 1080p hd and I do know about obtaining in camera color I do own Barry Green’s book and dvd lol thanks in advance.

Look at both of Steve Hullfish's books. He has an introductory level book (a new edition of which has just been released) and a more advanced book. He covers several different programs and much of the advice is not specific to any software. Both of his books can easily be found by searching his name on Amazon, and both are listed in threads here. He also has a blog on Pro Video Coalition, where he has posted a number of color correction video tutorials.
