Color Correcting water?

I was out in the north shore of Wahau (Hawaii) shooting behind the scenes footage of the ABC hit TV show "LOST" last month. I spent about 10 hours straight on the set(s) shooting all sorts of stuff. One thing that I noticed from being there and then watching the show on TV is the ocean on the show is a really deep blue. I shot some stuff right there on the beach as well and it was not as blue in person as it was on TV. So would something like that be color corrected to give it that deep bluish hue?

Re: Color Correcting water?

Pure colour correction, deep blue water is what people think it "should" look like.
It also corrects for the differences in the colour due to the various times of day the shots were taken.

Uncorrected, the water colours would constantly change within a scene.....bad.

Re: Color Correcting water?

Exactly. For continuities sake you would have to keep the ocean jiving. The apparent color of the ocean is the reflection of the sky; overcast grey, sky blue, orange sunset or golden dawn.

The ocean is THAT BLUE and it's the most beautiful color I have ever seen but it's not always perceived that way for the sky.

Re: Color Correcting water?

Somthing that helps as well is a polarizer. If set correctly it is great for making the sky, and water a much deeper, richer blue.

Re: Color Correcting water?

But be sure you use the polarizer correctly. It's best used at 90-degree angles from the sun.
