Color Correcting/Color Grading tutorials?

Hi,

I'm shooting a short film this weekend and would like to incorporate some color correction/color grading effects in post. Are there any good tutorials for After Effects?

Thanks,

Here's a link I found that is more geared towards matching shots rather than actually creating a look with color.

My words of advice...learn levels and curves the best you can. Those 2 effects will do everything you want. Also, if you have 6.5 Pro you will have a copy of Color Finesse, which is also a great tool, especially the secondary stuff.

Oldie but goodie. That was one of the very first tuts I ever printed. Gone one one.

Color correction is fairly simple. You look at the amounts of RGB values form shot to shot of say, the lead's shirt. Then you use Levels (and specifically the Input and Output levels for each color channel) to make them have the same (or near) amounts.

For instnace, you lead is wearing a neutral grey shirt that in one shot is 75% in all RGB. If in another shot, the image is a little reddish, the shirt maybe something like this:

R - 80
G - 75
B - 75

Then is it simply a matter of lowering the amount of red in that shot to 75.

Of course, some shots will be darker than others, but as long as the relationship between the values is the same, the colors will be the same. And once all your shots are balanced, then you can add a solid Layer, have it be whatever color you want, and begin to tint the entire sequence. That's a fast way, but with the right blending mode, it usually works well.

Hey one, did you get the saber link I put up in the other thread?

EDIT: Speaking of color finesse, still waiting on the tut . . . . :)

Yeah, I got it. I haven't got a chance to get on my comp at home for last few days so I haven't got a chance to really read through it. There is one of there that I think will help me with a shot I'm working on.

As for the Color Finesse tut, I'll be grading the music video before the end of the month, so I will keep some notes and some grabs and post that when I'm done.
