Color Bit-Depth Question

I know the benefits of working with 10, 16, and 32 Bit Colors over 8. You get more accurate coloring, and less banding in stuff like glows and gradients. My question is: If you are going to be outputting to DVD, HD-DVD, or BluRay, won't your colors be compressed/crunched in the final render anyways, and reintroduce these undesired color defects? So, is there any benefit to working at a higher bit-depth if you plan on only rendering out once (not several renders ontop of each other) and you are going to be outputting to one of these optical disc mediums? I am assuming that the higher bit-depth only benefits those that plan on going back out to film. Am I right?

There's also quite a difference between 10bit linear and 10bit log.

You have a lot more options working in 10bit log/float for any kind of effects or post processing like color correcting. It provides way more lattitude.
