Color and 2.35 aspect ratio

I have a project I shot 16:9 with an HVX200 at 1080pA. I will be changing it to 2.35 aspect ratio with a widescreen matte. What should I do first, the color correction/grading in Color or the 2.35 matte? I'm concererned the matte will throw off the black levels in the scopes in Color. Another option is to nest my matted sequence in another sequence so the black matte bars won't show. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks.

Do you coloring first. Bringing in the project with a matte on it will affect the color of the matte (your black bars will be adjusted along with your picture, which would look horrible).

you can drop the matte on in FCP beforehand because when you send it to Color it ignores it anyway, doesn't translate. you still have a full frame to work with while in Color.
