I used to work at a Call Center about 10 or so years ago. One of our accounts there was we did Customer Service for all of the US Readers Digest customers, both for the magazine and for their product line. I swear I have never seen a more corrupt company than RD. Some of the stuff they tried to have us pull was borderline illegal.
They'd send out bills to elderly people for shi* they never ordered or recieved, and they get these notices from in house collection agencies threatening to take them to court and blah blah blah if they didn't pay. So instead of them just getting a bill, they would one day just get a bill stating that this was their 10th and final letter. They would call, completely embarressed and automatically pay their bill without even questioning what it was for.
The worst part was that we weren't able to tell them what they were paying for. You had to try to explain to them in so many words that they didn't have to pay for, because we could get in shi* for letting them know what it was.
Another example would be, if someone get a bill for a magazine subscription. What would happen is they would send in those sweepstakes forms and in super fine print (now imagine it's hard enough for us to read, let alone an 80 year old) they would be signing up for an automatic renewal for the magazine and two years worth of condensend books. They'd get a bill, call us and if they didn't actually say the words "I would like to cancel" we weren't allowed to cancel their account.
I had a guy call me one time and tore a poo pooing stip off of me (for completely legitimate reasons too). His mother had died in a nursing home. A month or so later he and the rest of his family went to clean out her house and founds thousands of dollars worth of RD crap (I'm talking unopened books, cd's, everything they offered), stacked all over her house. I think the total was well over 150,000.000 worh of shi* that was on her account. She had been getting this stuff from them for years, hadn't ordered it but was paying it because she was getting a letter saying that she owed it. I think line he said to me was something like "You poo pooers, you sucked her poo pooing dry" (I'll never forget that). I marked the account as deceased and told him to just to "right return to sender". Which means nothing else goes out to them. The worst part was that about two months later (I was a guy that would take supervisor calls, so I would get the occasional repeat pissed off customer), they were still sending shi* to her.
poo pooing disgusting.
I poo pooing hated that job.
The worst poo pooing company ever.
