Collateral

Re: Collateral

So wait. Does that mean there was no 35 at all used during that scene? If not, that's impressive because it really read like 35 to me.

Re: Collateral

pretty much all dark scenes were hidef(other than the club i guess). b/c its more convenient to shoot video at night than film, which requires more careful lighting

Re: Collateral

Amusingly, I read somewhere that if they used a certain type of film stock (I can't remember for the life of me which one) that it would have had better low light sensitivity than the HD cameras did.

Michael Mann is great in taking a format's limitations and using them to his benefit. I thought that Collateral looked great, and the "video look" it had throughout wasn't out of place at all :D

Re: Collateral

I loved this film.
I also noticed that some scenes looked really great. Those may have been the 35mm ones. Like the scene at the jazz club.
The dance club some of the movements looked video. It was probably shot in a mixture of 35mm and HD.

In the end, I really wasn't worried with the quality of the image, but the story itself. I was engaged with the story, but I also paid attention to the FBI guys. They were all there and then vanished. There were some unnecessary stuff in the plot. But the film was great, Fox and Cruise did a really great job.

All the best

Re: Collateral

I thought this movie was awesome...

You guys are wondering where the money went? This was shot in the streets of LA... not exactly the cheapest place to shoot. There were car crashes, a gigantic cast of extras, top of the line digital equipment and some of the top stars in Hollywood. Add all of these together and it makes for some expensive filmmaking... :P

Re: Collateral

I just read an interview with Mike Mann, and he says that the Korean disco was shot on 35mm. Here is the quote:
"... the Korean disco was done on film because we were on a big interior set that had to be lit and we could move around more freely with the cmarea ou our shoulder shooting 35mm than we could using digital."

All the best

[quote author=eyeglayze link=board=movies;num=1092072610;start=0#0 date=08/09/04 at 10:30:10] this film is full of **** like this, crazy coincidences and convenient and device laden plot points.

If you really analyze them, 95% of mainstream hollywood films are like this.

Re: Collateral

Yeah, if you looked at the setup they had for the digital stuff there was way more following them around. The viper had this huge truck of equipment that they needed in order to be able to use it.

All movies require a suspension of disbelief. Collateral required far less than the majority of the movies out there. Life itself is full of very odd coincidences and is more connected and seems more fictional than most movies I've seen. Maybe you just need to get out more if it seems unrealistic.

Re: Collateral

I felt some of the scenes that were shot using HDV looked like DV, but that was the POINT. It gave an edgy, stark quantity to certain scenes.

Though this might sound daft, I felt that having a video look to certain scenes made it seem more immediate and real. Just my $0.02.

Anyway, with a good script, a briiliant actor and a legendary director, the movie could have been shot on a Sony Handicam for all I care - still loved it!

(Just kidding about the Handicam part!) ;)
