Cold weather shooting

I was wondering if anyone had any advise or possibly some precautions I should take when using my DVX in cold weather for an extended period of time? This week I will be working outdoors in a damp climate with temperatures of about 30 to 40 Fahrenheit. Next week I will be shooting at higher elevations, like 4000-5000 ft and the temperature will be around 15-20 degrees.

Re: Cold weather shooting

I would also like advice on this topic as I'm planning to shot some spec spots that need to take place with snow on the ground, which means going outside in KC in January. Good times.

Re: Cold weather shooting

I could find myself in the same situation in a few weeks. Has anyone used Porta Brace's Polar Mitten? I probably wouldn't buy it...way to expensive. I'd have to be shooting a lot in the cold to make the investment. Just wanted to see how well it worked - ???

Re: Cold weather shooting

I've shot with the DVX naked (no warmers on the camera, that is :p) and it gave me ridiculous dropouts after a day of shooting in -20C weather.

The next day on re-shoots, I took in the camera ever so often to warm it up, and it was fine. Just make sure it doesnt get too cold for too long, and you should be okay.

Re: Cold weather shooting

Do the rain covers help keep it warm at all? I'll bet you could strategically place warmers inside a rain cover to keep it warmer for longer.

Re: Cold weather shooting

I have used the warmers with other cameras under a home made cozy many times. Much of the winter here it can be -30 (at that point it does not matter if it is fahrenheit or celcius ). It works really well at the tape door, and on the oposite side.

Shooting in California. Gotta love it. ;)

Re: Cold weather shooting

Hey, we shot in CA last week and it hasn't been all that warm. :p Of course, we were on a soundstage so it didn't matter. Still, if I'm coming out to shoot and edit in sunny L.A., I want sun! Even if I did lose my sunglass on the set. Oh well, back to KC on Friday for cold-weather testing of the DVX.

Re: Cold weather shooting

It has been a bit cold this past week. But not cold enough to cause drop outs!

Re: Cold weather shooting

TC you come up here and we will show you cold. Spit freezing, nostrils burning, pee in the snow cold.

Re: Cold weather shooting

Come down here and I'll show you board shorts and sandals in the winter. ;)

Re: Cold weather shooting

Tell me about it I used to live in L.A. I recall going surfing in January. Anyway thanks for all the info.

Re: Cold weather shooting

Moisture/condensation are DVX killers ! Make sure you acclimate your camera before going in/out of cold weather. No sudden temp changes .

im still wearing sandals and Im in Canada.

But a rain cover with a hand warmer cinched in the hand strap works well. Even a rain cover alone works, as the DVX generates its own heat, which you will realize if you ever put the camera in a bag while its still on.

Re: Cold weather shooting

There is no winter in Vancouver! I could wear sandals too. But I may loose my toes after ten minutes. I think I will keep them.
As far as moisture is concerned. It helps to wrap the camera in an air tight bag before you bring it in. The tempature change is what attracts the moisture. And is not very good.
