Coil Wired Boom

I'm shopping for a boom on B&H, and I am wondering, has anyone here used a wired boom (with the cable coiled inside it) befor? I haven't, but it look convinient. Anyone had experience with these types of poles?

If you move the pole a lot you can hear the wire smacking around on the inside... that's the only complaint I've heard about that pole... and I always say that if you're moving it that wildly you probably need to practice more anyway. You should be able to move the boom fast and smooth without causing any noise.

I've got the graphite version of that pole and I love it. It's a lot more and you can't hear the cable because the graphite is dead... and I think that pole is the best deal going right now. The internal CC is worth $100 by itself.

Mattin, you clinched the deal on that pole. Thanks for the help.

I've seen your posts in this forum and you seem to be the definitive resource for audio shopping lists. I've already got a lighting kit in my cart, so I am decided on going with B&H for one big shipment.

Here's what I have looking for, for sound (the links are decisions I have made):

Boompole
Shotgun/Shockmount (B&H kit)
Softie Windscreen
XLR Cable (around 20')
Pistol Grip <--- Not confirmed on this one, never used it, but it looks pretty solid.

As far as a mixer goes, I will be doing in camera for the time being, and will purchase one next summer when I gear up for by feature shoot.

So, feel free to audit make reccommendations to my list if you feel like it. :)

Oh, and also... I was wondering what the lav equivilent to the AT4073A is. I have looked around the forums, but haven't found a lav that is reccomended as predominantly as the AT4073A is when shotguns are discussed.

I am going to make a preliminary guess and say, the AT803B.

I get embarrassed when people put extra meaning on a post of mine. There have been a few times where people like Ty Ford, Dave Fisk, and Tigeba have put me in my place... and I expect that there are other pros who roll their eyes when somebody gives me praise that I don't deserve... I've just bought a lot of stuff and found out what I like and what I don't like... and then I post the hell out of it. Audio for video is my favorite part of shooting DV... I know there are guys on here that are quiet experts... so I try to stay humble while sharing opinions on stuff I bought and like or dislike. It's no big deal and I'm still learning just like you are.

I like your shopping list except for the K-Tek hand-grip. Why do you want that? Is it just to use it as a handgrip? If so then it's cool... There aren't many times that I use my shotgun in just the handgrip... but I guess I have done it a couple times. I just want to be sure you know they're showing a shockmount on top of that grip that's NOT included. Still in the big scheme of things $60 is nothing. If you really want a handgrip then get it.

For lavs I like Countryman. For a cheap one I'd go with either the EMW or B3... One of those will run your from $150-180 depending on the connector and it will have great sound. If you've got the cash then get the B6 because you can hide it anywhere on your actor. That will run about $250, but you're paying for it's small size, not an improvement in sound.

Hmmm, 250 is a little ore than I wanted to spend, since they will mainly be used to bail me out of longshot sound situations.

I will be buying two, and I am wondering, is there anything remarkable that stikes against the AT803B? And if you have had experience with it, is the AT803R worth the extra cash?

You can get an EMW or B3 for between $150-180 depending on connector. Both are really common lavs in a pro kit. I'd look there first.

I have a good friend locally that has an 899 and he just bought two EMW's and two B6's... He didn't buy any more 899's.

I know you asked about the 803... but the 899 lists for $100 more and it's well regarded... but I'd go Countryman in the $150 range if you can. They just have a good natural sound that most people really like.
