Coding Question

I am redoing my personal film site

www.outlandpictures.com/dev

The dev is for development :P  The question I have is:

I was told (By Rich and a few others) to 'rename' my Media Files by adding an X at the end of the extension of a file.

The 2 I currently have on the Reel page end with the extension of .mov

Can I add the same to this?  As in .movx

Also, where do I do this?  Do I go into my MOVIES folder and RENAME by adding the X?  DO I then have to go into the CFM and INDEX and add the X to those extensions:

<a href="movies/OPLO.mov" target="_blank"><img src="images/OPLOimg.jpg" border=0></a>&nbsp;<img src="images/reelgrid.jpg">&nbsp;<img src="images/reelgrid.jpg"><br>

Looking for a little input!  Today I created new pages!

Re: Coding Question

You will need to rename both the file itself and any code that specifically points to the renamed item.

Re: Coding Question

So you are saying:

Anything that points to the 'Media' has to have that extension.

i.e.

I render it.
I rename it from .mov to .movx
I place it into 'Movies Folder'
I then go into CFM File and make sure they all have the same .movx

Basically, from the get go; I name it and place it with .movx ?

Re: Coding Question

yep! Well, actually sort of. You don't need to go back and re-render the project just rename the file with a .movx (I think that should work)

Re: Coding Question

I just renamed the .MOV file with an X at the end.

I then went into CFM File and renames the code "<a href="movies/OPLO.movx"

I saved and did the Overwriting of Files and it doesnt work.

??? :-[ :-/ :'( :D

Re: Coding Question

hmm that's odd. Try a re-render then? That should almost certainly work.

Re: Coding Question

John, the process as you outlined it should work just fine. From now on, there's no such thing as .mov as far as your website is concerned. Everything in your code should be .movx

I'm not familiar with CFM, but you should be able to find/replace all instances of ".mov" with ".movx" in your code.

Re: Coding Question

John,

Not sure if I am getting the jest of your dilemma, but you can delete the MOV version or just rename the one that is there. (or leave two versions if you want, doesn't matter)

Then in your html editor you need to redo the links and then re upload the page. it is still pointed to the MOV. Best way to look at it is to treat it like a brand new object and start the link process fresh as apposed to trying to repair current link.

By adding the x you cut down the bandwidth because it has to be saved by the user and can't be streamed. That said, when someone goes to your site you will need to give them instructions on how to save, change and play. Clicking on it will link an unknown file format.

Re: Coding Question

A re-render? I don't think that would help. The file is not changed when you rename the extension--just how programs handle it. With the "x" at the end, your browser doesn't recognize it as a Quicktime file and therefore won't launch the plugin to stream it.

I saw this in your code: target="_blank"
I might try removing that from the hyperlink... ???

Take out the entire part?

target="_blank"

Re: Coding Question

change
<a href="movies/OPLO.mov" target="_blank">
to
<a href="movies/OPLO.movx">
(assuming there is a file named OPLO.movx in the movies directory)

Re: Coding Question

Didnt work.

Can X extensions only be applied to WMV ?

Im bailing the Office right now; only place where I can FTP. NO worries until Monday I guess. Tks for the input guys!

Check out the site; let me know of any tips! (Im an amatuer so know crazy tips)

Re: Coding Question

Hmmm...well, I did a test with an mp3 file. It worked fine. The ".mp3" played in the browser and the ".mp3x" didn't (dialog box asked me what to do with the file).

So, you can probably take that out of the equation, anyway. :)

Re: Coding Question

Changing the file extension does nothing to the file. You could change any file to a doc or jpg or whatever and when you put the correct extension back on, it works fine.

You problem is in the coding and linkage.

Try adding it new from scratch as a new object and link altogether. Also, depending on the program you are using it could be pretty stubborn when you link a certain type of file. Make sure its just a standard hyperlink pointing to file location and not any special coding related to graphics, video, java or whatever.

Which is why I code in notepad. ;)

Re: Coding Question

I have been putting the code together in Notepad. I think CFM is Cold Fusion?

Ill try it again this week (at office). I also want to turn the MOVIE VIEWING PAGES BLACK for when it is okay to stream.

??? Not sure if I'm understanding this.

Re: Coding Question

I have seen some sites whereas you goto watch a clip and instead of white on the background, the entire screen is BLACK.

Re: Coding Question

For that, you need to embed the player in a new page and set that page's <BODY> tag to <BODY BGCOLOR="#000000">

If there are already other tags inside the BODY, just add the BGCOLOR to them.

Oh, and the color can be other things, too #FF0000 is red, for instance, and #00FF00 green.
