i have the adobe production studio, are the codecs that come with ae and premiere the best out there. or are there other ones, primarily free, that I can use but just havent found them yet. i have a dvx and when i made a dvd it was CRAP. it must have been my compression, cause preview on the screen is superb but once put on the DVD CRAP I say.
 
what bit rate are you using when you render your mpeg 2 for the DVD ?
did you shoot project at 24p ?
are you making a 24p DVD ?
 
I'm not near my NLE, but I'm pretty sure P.Pro doesn't have a good default Preset for 24p.

You're going to need to create your own preset by doing these settings

2pass VBR

Max bitrate 8.5
Min bitrate 3
Average 7 (Lower this if you need lower file size, i.e. a movie over 100 minutes)
Field order : PROGRESSIVE SCAN
Frame rate: 23.976

Use PCM Audio, unless you own the DD encoder (who does anyway?)
 
DivX is a delivery format not an authoring format as such it's very hard to get a good quality trancode from it especially when going to a broadcast format like MPEG-2, unless the DivX file is at a very high bitrate or indeed at HD resolutions.
