I'm so happy when films like this come out. Completely out of nowhere. No marketting. Nothing. Saw the trailer about a month ago, and was shocked to see it hit a local theater here last Friday (a major theater, at that). I mean, I'm not happy it's not getting any marketting. That's complete ass. I'm happy I got to see it in a theater.
Really, really liked it. Quiet little SF world as the back drop to a love story. The story wouldn't exist without the SF, but the SF is so transparent it doesn't really matter.
Tim Robbins is ok, but his role really doesn't let him stretch much. Samantha, as always, is ****ing brilliant. I'm more and more convinced of her divinity with each role. She gets some very interesting moments in what could be an understated role.
The direction/photography is interesting, apart from some strange choices. Sudden cuts to first person shots in a different medium (video?) that are there and gone (they almost scream "reshoot", except that they're so clumsy it had to be intentional). And a bizarre choice to suddenly switch to some ultra grain (or really high gain...) for some of the night time exteriors. But only some of them.
The film feels a lot like "Until the End of the World", but on a more personal, less epic scale. It takes some almost strange turns, and maybe wraps up too neatly, but it manages to hit the notes it wants to hit.
There's a cameo in the film, in the karaoke bar, that is laugh out loud funny. Unless you're the only one in the audience that gets it, and recognizes who it is, and people look at you strangely for laughing.
