Cloud of Dust

I have a scene in my short, where a guy is doing donuts on a four wheeler and stirring up so much dust that the guys shooting at him can't see well enough to hit him. What would be best to create all that dust as a pratical effect? Or would it be best to use something in After Effects? Thanks.

Dan

try using Particular, there are alot of physics you can control and add a blur to the particles to make it look more dusty/ cloudy.

Thanks. I'm starting to lean that way, although I have never used Particular. I'm thinking it will be too difficult to pull off the practical dust effect that I want on a zero $ budget.

wheat flour is pretty cheap. you could at least use it to make enough of a base cloud to comp over that your not just purely comping in something generated. or even if you just black screen the effect you want using dust on a smaller scale, and then comp it in as a larger element it would likely be better than anything you could generate ..if your looking for photorealism anyway.

The wheat flour seems like a good idea. I'm guessing it would turn the actor (who does his own stunts) all white. Hmm, gotta think about it. Thanks for the idea.

have you already shot? if not I would try to get the driver to make as much dust as possible, Particles is not really for beginers. at least not realistic particles.

No we haven't shot yet. We start this weekend. I think practical dust would look a lot better on screen. I think we'll try the shot without practical dust first, and then try some practical dust before we finish for the day, so the actor can go clean up afterwards.
