Closing back of DVX sunshade

Anyone have any good ideas on permanently closing the back of the DVX sunshade? For example, with some plastic board etc... If you have a rain slicker on the camera some water might be able to sneak in through them. Why is the sunshade open anyways? Thanks!

I think it's a Leica thing. They did that with some of their still camera lenses. I'm not entirely sure, but I think that the idea was to give a less obstructed view for the camera operator. Looking at the subject from behind the camera, the operator could see through the lens shade.

Sometimes the Leica viewfinder window on the rangefinder cmeras would be blocked by a large lens shade. They made the lens shade open on the back so as not to obscure the view through the viewfinder. Why this practice would continue with video camera lenses is beyond me.

Sounds like the old "well that's the way we've always done it." This attitude stifles innovation.
