Re: Close-up lens for DVX

yes.. its a good idea to get achromatic diopter instead of those cheap ebay ones, as the ebay ones really screw your image up.

Re: Close-up lens for DVX

I'm not sure at all I understand the real function of this guy achromatic diopter.

Is it a macro lens ? (but our in-built Leica is already quite impressive on this aspect.)

Is it a focal doubler ? (I thought the maximum was x1.6)

Something — an inner voice — tells me it's something else. Could it be the ring that will free the universe from the crappy close-ups ? The Messiah ? The One ?

Better be, considering the price. $330...

It sure isn't a cheap Messiah.

Re: Close-up lens for DVX

It allows you to focus closer, which will let you get larger close-up shots. Achromatic means that it's corrected for chromatic aberrations. With enough macro power, you could do close-ups of insects and other tiny objects. The DVX lets you shoot all the way up to the surface of the lens, but only in wide-angle mode, so the objects are still relatively small. The diopters let you use more telephoto and get larger object sizes.

Re: Close-up lens for DVX

Thank you very much Barry the White. If I get it well, it means you can focus on close objects while zooming in on them without the limitations of the macro mode that starts falling apart at Z63/64.

Is that it ?

If so, what do the +2 and +3.5 characteristics stand for ? Are they a multiplying factor ?

Another tricky question I've not succeeded to answer to : what's the "neutral" value of the Leica zoom lens (the equivalent of a 50mm in 35mm) ? Does anyone have a focal length chart of equivalence between 1/3" and 35mm ?

Re: Close-up lens for DVX

i've been using the canon 500D (+2). It's about $100 and works well up to about 65z. It does the trick however in letting you get close to the subject and enlarging the object.

Re: Close-up lens for DVX

So maybe we could detour it from its original function and make it a cheap mini 35...

Has anyone tried ?

Re: Close-up lens for DVX

Because the 500D is a +2 you can get the ant hill just zoom back. I've shot objects at a distance of 5 feet. zoom to 65 and it goes out up until then you can judge your distance and use that as an aid to capture the object.
Too do what you are trying to do may require the tele-extender -let's say the 1.6 by Century optics and then the 500D on top of that. I don't have the 1.6 and don't know if this is the way to go but that may be the way to get both. You still need to zoom back.

Re: Close-up lens for DVX

sorry Daniel - my bad.
train of thought moving in a different direction. The DOF on the 500D is shallow. Seems to me the idea of close-up is to get really close up (half inch back is out). I think Jarred Land did some close up DOF using the 500D at some point last year or early this year?
