clip speed...Can't figure it out!

All,

I want to a Fast / slow mo time ramp sequence in Vegas but there is setting in vegas that is driving me crazy.

As I increase the playback speed of a split clip, the clip now contains the rest of the data from the other half of the clip (from where I split it) not only that, but its looping back around to the start of the clip. It seems Vegas is trying to increase the speed of the clip but retain the clip length in the timeline.

what I want to do is speed the clip up, but only up the the end of the clip where I split it (so I imagine the clip length would be much shorter in the timeline because its sped up 3x)

is there a setting in vegas that "locks" the end portion of a clip?

Thanks!!! I knew had to be something simple like that.

Is there any other method of doing this though?....It looks like its only increasing the clip speed by 2x (or, it seems to reach a limit as to how fast it can speed up when using the CNTRL - drag method) i'm looking for dramatic 3x to 6x ramp speeds for clips...

You should be able to get up to 4x that way.

The other way to do this is to insert a velocity envelope. Use them together, and you can get up to 12x speed change.

My secret trick I've found is to do those instant mid-clip quick/slow motions is pretty simple. Put down the clip you want, trim the head and tail, then split the event in the middle at the exact frames where you want to speed up or slow down. So in a single "normal-quick-normal" sequence, you'll split one event into three, compressing the time in the new middle event. Ctrl Drag the event in the middle (that you want speed modified) to the desired length and the beginning and end frames match up with the other events beside it. Slap a flash or dip to white transition on the two edit points and you have some smooth looking video!

In instances where I need more than 4x, I typically pre-render (to a new file, not a vegas prerender) the event I want to make speedy and time-compress it again. The downside to this method is if you need to modify your in and outs on the slowdown clip, you have to start over, but the method used and vegas style editing make it very quick to re-do.

This will work in almost any NLE, so enjoy!
