Clip Referencing

I am editing a documentary with footage compiled from the past 20 years. I am wondering how I can reference my clips on the timeline so that when I edit with a sub clip, it references back to its master (essentially linking the two together).

Related, I was also wondering if there is a double clip user warning like in Avid. I am trying to find a logical approach to not using the same clip twice in a sequence.

Only FCP 7 will allow you to go from a subclip to the master clip (yes, I know...I know). The other versions allow you to open the original file on the HD, but not find the master clip in the Browser. yes, this is long overdue.

And yes, there is a SHOW DUPLICATE FRAMES in FCP. In the triangle on the lower left of the timeline, there is a menu with that option.
