Hey everyone. I'm editing with Premiere Pro CS4 on Vista 64. Standard 4:3 video. I have a scene that I shot in a bathroom using a tripod. Its a reflection in the bathroom mirror of the main character walking up to the door, opening the door, and then exiting and closing the door. As he exits, a sinister black robed faceless figure appears behind him in the mirror, reaches out towards the main character, and then puts his hand back down as he fades away and disappears completely. Both of these scenes were shot one right after the other without moving the tripod or camera. To do this very "special" effect, I put the scene with the main character on video track 1, and cropped it (crop effect) so it was only taking up the left half of the screen. Then I put the scene, this time only showing the robed figure, on video track 2 and cropped it so it was only taking up the right half of the screen. I reversed this clip to give the movement of the robed figure an eerie quality, and I set the speed of the clip to 50% speed for slow motion. On track 3, above both of these, I put the same scene but, it only shows the bathroom (for background), no main character, no robed figure, and no action taking place. I cropped this clip so it only takes up the right half of the screen also. Then, in order to make the robed figure look like he appears, stays transparent, and then fades away completely, I adjusted the opacity level of the background clip on track 3. This way, only the robed figure looks transparent and fades away while the main character (on the left side of the screen) does not, as he opens the door and exits.
Now, here's my problem. Everything looks perfect when I play this in the timeline BEFORE I render it. But, when I render it, the clip showing the robed figure doesn't even show up when I play it back. All you see is the right half of the screen (where the robed figure should be) get dark and then light again (because of the opacity manipulation I did with the background clip on video track 3)! AND, on top of it all, when I play this in the timeline, after rendering, the clip of the robed figure doesn't even play, even though its still there on video track 2! And yes, the little eye icon is checked on the left, so the clip should be visible in the monitor window. Anyone know why the clip of the robed figure doesn't render and then doesn't even play in the timeline after I render? Anyone know how to solve this problem? My only guess is that it might have something to do with the reverse and slow motion I put on the clip and for some reason causes it not to render. I even tried just exporting the timeline into a movie without rendering first and the same thing still happens. Can somebody please help me? Thanks.
