Clients + Employees contacting you on a sunday

In the past month i've had 3 different clients message me on a sunday for work purposes. One of them wanted an actual meeting. and just had an employee of mine message me about an invoice.

Call me old fashioned but it really irks me to have any type of work correspondence over the weekend. Does anyone on here feel the same way?

Its not like im in the middle of shooting, or in post production. I just don't see the need to bug people about work on the weekends.

I'd love to hear anyone elses thoughts on this.

"Call me old fashioned".

You're old fashioned.

Sounds like you need to get up to speed. Closed Sundays is long gone, just like Betamax.

Well people will call when they call. Its the nature of running your own business.

You don't have to answer when they call. If it's important, they'll leave a message and you can call them first thing Monday. If they consistently call on Sundays and you never answer they'll get the hint that you're unavailable on the weekend.

That said, I got a call from a co-worker today, and it was work related. I'll always answer a co-worker's call or a call from my bosses, but not a client unless I really, really like them or it's prearranged. Saturdays can go to work, but Sunday is a day off. I work enough on the weekends already.

cool thanks for giving me the run down.
I just work so hard during the week that I don't want to have to think about work for the rest of the weekend. I'm ok dealing with work on saturday, but don't like it. Especially getting frantic text messages about work (client didn't realize what day it was).

I think what i'm really upset about this particular employee. He's been insubordinate, and i've been kicking myself for hiring him. But he's no longer on the project, he said some inappropriate things to a client. THAT is still pissing me off.

Wow, so a lot of you are working on weekends? I mean if I work a production then of course my personal life is neglected until wrap.

But a lot of you are dealing with clients and work on weekends?

I mean if its a special request for a client and I know ahead of time, it happens.

so dealing with clients on a sunday is a frequent occurrence?

I tend to see my self as always open for business. Sometimes it sucks but i mean someones gotta do it. I actually had a shoot yesterday.

I got a call at 1:30 AM last Tuesday. Emergency gig and I was needed to be on location at 10AM. If I had not answered some one else would have.

If you don't want calls on Sunday then just forward your calls to me. lol!

Thekeygun, kgimedia nailed it on the head with this statement:

If I had not answered some one else would have.

Meaning: if money is calling, and you don't answer it, they will call someone else. If you are running your own business, especially in a service industry like video, you have to be ready to take the call. I guess the question is: "Can you afford to miss calls/jobs/clients in this economy?"

I don't think it is old fashioned, or wrong or anything. It all depends on the individual's business and the importance of the call. I wouldn't be too pissed if it was something that wasn't gonna take up a ton of my time but was actually important. If it was something that could wait until Monday morning though, then I can see why it irritated you.

I'll agree that being available all the time can be good for business, but there will always be those clients that take advantage and will always be harassing you no matter what. Sometimes it it good to have some professional boundaries. Of course, if it was the odd weekend where you're on vacation or shooting a big project, and you told people you wouldn't be available til Monday and then they call, you have every right to be annoyed. I would be too, as I've had similar things happen. Hell, I've even had clients bug me on major holidays like Christmas.

Nektonic- yeah it was definitely something that could have waited until monday morning.

The client forgot what day it was, and found out as soon as he tried calling the talent.

get two phones. one for family and friends, and one for business. don't give out your personal number to employees or clients. on sunday, you can leave a message on your business phone that you'll be back on monday and you will return messages then.

Man... If I could afford to have two set days a week off.
But there just isn't enough hours between monday morning and friday night for that. I'm off duty when my body tells me I need to be.

It's not a 9-5 mon-fri business. That's part of the charm and part of the curse.

Of course, that's very much an age thing too. I tend to not contact people with family nights and weekends.

I agree with working any day of the week to get the job done. I agree with that...especially if i'm working on a large project.

Same client called me when he KNEW I was on vacation. His computer crashed and lost all the footage I shot and needed me to send it to him asap....while I was on vacation.

So I just got another phone line.

Commitments allowing, I'm usually delighted to work on Sundays. I don't do fractional days, and Sunday bills as double-time. What's not to like?
