client wants timecode vhs

My client wants to make an edit decission list from watching vhs coppies of dv footage with embedded time code. Total running time of raw footage 4hrs. I can insert timecode in after effects but I can't figure a way to do it that doesn't add up to some 50 hours of rendering time. Anyone got any ideas. I,m using premiere 6.5 to capture from DVX 100. My computer is pentium 4 -2,5ghz not a total flyer but 50 freaking hours?

Re: client wants timecode vhs

why can't your client use the timecode off the VCR? I don't see any other easy "faster" way of doing this. 50hrs? 4hrs! :o Man, Mino, you have me stuck! Have you checked adobe to see if they have a special TC plugin for Premiere? Good luck!

Re: client wants timecode vhs

..capture the footage into your NLE through your DVX. then each captured clip should have its own timecode. then just edit as normal, and output an EDL.

VHS deck is not going to show DV timecode - it only shows control track.

Matrox RTx100 has a TC plugin that works great. No rendering!

Re: client wants timecode vhs

Check your camera... I believe there is an option in the camera menu that will output the video through the composite out with the menu info onscreen. Just hock your camera up directly to the VHS deck and turn this feature on - straight dump to tape.... I have the DVX-100a and I'm pretty sure it does this.

Re: client wants timecode vhs

I think Doggy has the only solution. As far as I can tell Premiere does not have the ability to export or burn in the timecode.  Since it's just for some edit decisions you could transfer the 4 hours to VHS right from camera on SLP and give him a tape - Take you a little over 4 hours. If you mean the 4 hours is what you have broken down more footage too then export from Premiere to tape [via camera] and use the pass through to VCR.

Re: client wants timecode vhs

That would be sweet...I'll check, mine's a 100 but let's hope

Re: client wants timecode vhs

Be a little messy but should do the trick. I'm surprised Premiere can't burn a timecode. :-/

Luck!

Re: client wants timecode vhs

Thanks guys...That will do nicely, I can get it down to timecode and the little arrow thingy that indicates play. Saves me 50 hours of rendering ;D

Re: client wants timecode vhs

Credit where credit is due - Sirius_Doggy was all over that one.

I would have had you running fiber optics and lasers. :D

Re: client wants timecode vhs

Glad I could help... alot cheaper than the fiber optic/laser route which I'm sure would've looked real cool ........ ;)

Are you saying that it worked and you got the timecode to "print" to the VHS dubb ? Cool.

Another optional way to do this is to have a Post House do itfor you ( and charge the client of course). Sometimes we try to do everything in our own facilities and lose sight of alternatives.

Re: client wants timecode vhs

Yep...I'm sayin it worked. I would normaly consider alternatives like outsourcing and billing, but I have agreed to produce this DVD on spec for a one third profit so I would be billing myself one third. It's a project thats been in the works for a while among friends and I decided to give it a shove cos I've got some downtime and It's all new to me (this particular style of shoot and edit) But anyway it worked and it cost nothing. Thanks again Sirius_Doggy ;)

Re: client wants timecode vhs

Thanx Mino

I had never really thought about it before....and of course I can also do this out of my DSR11 deck as well (even better) .
