Client owes me money. They moved from Canada to Mexico. Any hope of retrieving funds?

hilariously weird or total BS. they could be lying, who knows?

anyway insisting on payment in full before final delivery is a good way to ensure you dont have to chase people down after theyve gotten what they wanted. you could even send a low res version with watermark as proof the work is done. i mean, they could still use that crappy watermarked version if they wanted as the final video and still not pay you, but sheesh...

But the 1/2 initial payment is important as well, that should cover the immediate costs of the project, then if they decide to 'take off'... you have something to cover the cost of the project...

It may yield a 'per hour' income that is 1/10 that of a seasonal berry picker in Wisconsin.... but at least the other costs are covered...

Maybe you should post to her timeline and friends that she is a deadbeat... I am sure that would get her attention.

Welp, the person actually responded to my messages. Apparently both her and her husband aren't working and have no income. I have no idea if they dropped their life here and went to go live the Mexican Dream or whatever the hell happened, but she offered to have her own mother pay $100 a month for the next four months. This whole thing is hilariously weird.

Honestly I would just accept this and move on, sounds like otherwise it will just end up being a massive headache.

I would harass them in any ways possible (that weren't costly) after verifying their sob story. If they're broke, then they're broke, but I would want to know for sure. They're (both!) not working? How do they feed themselves or pay bills? Surely they must own stuff that has value. Are they planning on never working again?

I would demand and expect payment, either way, even if it's 6 months down the road.

I did some audio work for someone on this very forum once. It was something very quick, which I charged US$100 for.

I was not very savvy and trusted them a bit too much, so I didn't even do a work order, contract, nor half up front.

Long story short, I sent them the audio and still have not heard from them. Since it was only $100, I took it as a valuable lesson in conducting business. I tried to reach them several times through this forum and email, but no luck.

It sounds like you've learned a valuable lesson here. Of course you're talking more money at stake, which I too would be eager to get back, but after a while it can become more trouble than it's worth. Of course, that's up to you to decide. Just be careful because in trying to bully them into paying you, there could be unforseen side effects such as your brand loosing its professional demeanor, or in your haste, perhaps even crossing the line into slander and such...in which case you could loose the moral high road.

In any case, there are many ways to approach this, and everyone has their own of going about it. Regardless of what you choose to do, lesson well learned.
-Best of luck, Rafael
