encoded a high res h264 quicktime file for a client. it plays perfectly on my computer. however, when my client plays it back, he gets sound only, no video. after some research, i can find nothing on this problem. he has the latest version of quicktime (7.6.4). at the time of burning i had 7.6.2, though i now have 7.6.4. before and after my QT update, the video has played perfectly on my machine.

any ideas as to what causes these issues for my client?

specs on the file...
169.8 MB
codecs: H264, AAC, Timecode (created using compressor)
quality: between high/best
encoding: best quality / multi-pass.
audio: AAC stereo L/R 48k
filters: deinterlacing, algorithm odd
frame size 640x480, square
total bit rate: 10,862

thanks!!

Is he using Quicktime to play it? Can he play other similarly encoded videos? The first step in my mind would be for him to uninstall and reinstall Quicktime, since that sounds like a standard not having the codec problem. I assume it's included in Quicktime.

I think it is not that he doesn't have QT it is that the required codec for that video (that QT needs) is not installed. I would expect it to go and retrieve it though if not found - if possible ask client to try another computer as it may be that automatic codec download is not working on that computer.

client is running the latest version of QT. how is it even possible for quicktime to NOT have all the standard codecs like h264. i thought it was all automated. but now i hear there is an "automatic codec downloader" that could be broken? i have never heard of that, nor do i see it in any of the settings / preferences on my QT.

how do you tell QT to download the h264 codec?

EDIT: nevermind, turns out a simple re-install of quicktime fixed the problem. thanks!
