clicking sounds w/ AT897

Good morning,

I recently recorded a concert with an AudioTechnica AT897 on my DVX. In certain parts I hear clicking/popping sounds when I log the footage in FCP. I didn't hear these sounds through my headphones when I was recording.

Could this be an issue with the mic? FCP log and capture? The DVX?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Cheers,

John

It's very hard to say. On those rare occasions when I do production sound direct to camera I'm monitoring off of the mixer while working the boom pole so I have no idea what's actually being captured by the camera (I hate those gigs). I would say that the same holds true when monitoring the audio from the camera; you are hearing the audio as it goes into the camera, not what is actually being recorded. Otherwise you would be hearing the audio a few milliseconds later. Even you were hearing the "echo" - the actual captured sound - your concentration was probably elsewhere and you may not have noticed it, especially if it was a loud show.

First I would go back to the tape and listen to it on the camera with headphones. You already have the time references so it should not be too tedious. If you don't hear the noises there then you can be reasonably sure that it was introduced during the capture process.

I find that "clicks and pops" are typically the result of a bad cable somewhere, usually when an XLR is grounding out on itself through a loose wire. But if You didn't hear it when recording, would be strange. Have you tried recreating the process of what you're doing?
