During an edit I hit some button or??? and ended up with my timeline looking like this. Does anyone edit like this?

It's A/B expanded edit mode. Press 5 on the number pad to toggle in and out of it. You can also bring your mouse pointer to the edge of a clip (to where it becomes a double arrow) and double click.

If you still have the A x B and arrows after toggling it, then right click the track (the part where the track numbers are) and make sure "Expand track layers" is not checked.

I had not heard of this A/B expanded mode. I wonder if it was intended for J and L edits (where the sound edit point is slightly different from the video edit point).

Other NLEs also have this mode. Some people love it, coz it's super easy to see cuts - but to me, it takes up too much screen real estate. Of course, you can just toggle it on briefly whenever it's useful.

It's invaluable if you are trying to arrange a sequence from shots taken at different angles. The Sony webinar introducing Pro 12 (see the link in one of the menus at the head of their forum page) gives an excellent example of how it might be used. Incidentally, the A/B edit is an old system dating from very early in the pre-video film making days.

Ah yes, using a hot-splicer to conform A and B rolls to your workprint .... and hoping you don't make a mistake while splicing  and lose a frame!
I'm sure glad I don't have to deal with THAT anymore.

I've been away from Vegas for a while now, but I remember seeing that in version 4. I think they took it out in 5 or something. Cool that they brought it back, I loved it.

Sorry, but the A/B roll split on to 2 tracks only came in with Pro 12 (i.e. by that I mean the single click option to put it into operation or reunite the tracks).

No, the Expanded Edit Mode came with V12. The A/B track split has been there since at least V3 (that I can verify personally), and as I understand it, since V1. You right-click on the track header and choose "Expand track layers."

Expanded Edit Mode provides additional functionality, similar to "trim modes" in other NLEs.

Ah, I must try Expanded Edit Mode - didn't know it had more features than good old A/B track split.
