Clearing music for you feature film

i got a call from a guy, sounded pretty honest, saying he provides a service where he does all the leg work for getting music cleared for films. A Music Supervisor I guess. I'm interested in putting a song in my film that's been on the radio, but I just want clearance for film festivals. He said I should expect to pay about $250 for masters clearance and $250 for publishing and he only charges about $200 to do all the paperwork and make all the calls, etc.

does this sound correct to you? also, is getting music cleared a simple process or is it worth paying someone to do everything for you like this guy is offering to do?

i think it depends on the song and the popularity. i've heard you can pay a minimal amount to just have clearance for festivals and public screenings.

That's not true. There's no "minimum" amount and the label doesn't even have to grant you permission at all. There are two licenses you need to get: a sync license and a master use license. The former allows you to use the lyrics and the melody of the song (i.e as cover), and the latter allows you to use the specific recording of the song. You're probably thinking of a compulsory license, where you can pay a minimal royalty to be able to make a cover of a song and sells it, but this still doesn't give you the right to put the song in your film as this constitutes a public performance.
