Clear text over video

Hello guys, I am trying to figure out how to put clear text over video playing in the background between the letters. I know how to do the overlay in final cut but that is not giving me the desired effect. Is there another way to do this in Final cut or After Effects?
 
Do you mean transparent letters with a video filling them in? Clear text meaning translucent and in front of the footage? Can you post an example or mock-up?
 
I have been searching for an example but I have yet to find one. And yes that is it I am trying to do transparent letters with video filling them in. Thank you for making it a little more clear lol
 
So in after effects, create your text layer and select the "Silhouette Alpha" blend mode. You lose stroke if you had any, but the text remains editable.
 
Oh yeah and pre-comp the text and BG solid and place it on top of your video in another composition, otherwise that blend mode will punch through everything.
