Cleaning up Audio...

Is there a way maybe using one of the EQ's or effects either Apple or FCP HD to try to eliminate background noise? I have an interview that I shot and we used a stick mic which was right at the person's mouth but you can hear a lot of noise in the background. The noise was from the event that I was shooting. I have music playing underneath the sound byte so I have to watch my levels that they don't peak but I am trying to get rid of some of that background noise. It sounds like all 3 (main audio, music, and background noise is all competing with each other. I tried killing the music all together but then it makes the interview sound worse because of the background noise. I know now to use a directional mic next time instead of the omni directional.

Re: Cleaning up Audio...

I've used the built in sound filters/equalizers in FCP to help clean up the audio on a number of occassions, and it's somewhat effective for minimizing low frequency noise and a little less successful at minimizing other noise (car traffic, etc.).

By far the best thing that has worked for me (I'm on a DIY indie budget) is using Sound Soap as a plugin for Peak. I've been amazed at how well it works at eliminating background noise while keeping the vocals crystal clear.

It's no substitute for obtaining high quality background free audio in the first place (quite room, lav mic, etc.), but sometimes noise is simply unavoidable. If you're on a tiny budget, I highly recommend it.

Re: Cleaning up Audio...

So would I have to just import my audio into sound soap clean it up if i can then re import it back in FCP? I may have to look at that then.
