Cleaning up audio noise

Bag of Douche
I got some great audio, except for the fact that there is some "white noise" as it were, in the backround. This wouldn't be such a big deal if I wasnt using this as a monologue and that some parts of the movie are silent when i cut into it, and it sounds a bit tacky...

Anybody know of some software that could clean this up a bit or something to that extent?

tnx

Re: Cleaning up audio noise

most decent "pro" audio software should have a noise gate you could use or a "de-esser" or "de-hisser" or some form of noise removal filters you could use to get rid of a little white noise. pending your NLE it probably has some right in there as well. PPRO 1.5 has sopme decent noise removal audio filters. Audition has some good ones. Cubase would work.. Nuendo.. Pro Tools.. ect.

Re: Cleaning up audio noise

Sound Soap can remove a constant non-fluxuating sound pretty well. A high pass filter in just about any audio editing program can pull out a lot junk too. Roll off the bass to about 80Hz will remove some white noise. How to proceed exactly really just depends on the nature and frequency range of the noise.

To avoid the cutting to silence problems you can use some room tone to lay over the silent parts so it doesn't "sound tacky." :D If you don't have room tone then you might be able to find some in the pauses between sentences or takes.

Good luck

Re: Cleaning up audio noise

Audition will let you find an offending space within the clip and grab a profile of this offending white noise or other offending sound freq. Then you take this profile you made of the offending sound and load the profile to the whole track and it will subtrack those freqs. Unfortunately it will alter the sound, sometimes drastically. That is why everyone must learn how to record excellent tracks 1st time. Audio is too unforgiving to do it in post without serious compromise.

In this case the problem you have is that it's white noise, which is a combination of all freqs at random intervals. That is what dither is made out of because it's so useful for glueing samples together.

You can try it but it's best to TEST, TEST, TEST, ahead of time all cords, mics, & other technical problems for elimination beforehand. We have plenty of time to properly prepare.

Sound soap is the best thing I've heard so far that is affordable. I saw a demo at a trade show and was astounded at what this software can do. I highly recommend it.

Re: Cleaning up audio noise

Alright thanks

It's just that my headphones were pretty much screwed over the period of shooting (6 days) so all I could use it to check for was volume, couldn't hear any white noise, because the headphones themselves were jacked (excuse the pun)

Re: Cleaning up audio noise

I purchased SoundSoap Pro at the last DV Expo in Los Angeles. It is an amazing program. I'm working on a project where a flaminco guitarist recorded himself in a closet in his apartment (not the most pristine of locations). There was significant high frequency hiss on each of the takes. Sound Soap "ELIMINATED" the noise. Gone! And it did not color the guitar performance in any respect. I was impressed and so was he. I'd recommend it.

Several of these will work but keep in mind that all of them will effect the vocal audio if the white noise is in the voice range. If the volume of noise is not to high, you may want to take and add the noise across the entire track. This will stop the on and off sound. Then you can cover the noise with a some soft music or something.
