Clean Red Titles

As we all know Final Cut's title generator goes to hell in a handbasket when it comes to RED TITLES. They are pixelated, blurry, and incapable of clean lines. So, I created my red titles in Photoshop and am able to import them as psd files, but, it seems Final Cut is artifacting the edges (the dreaded jaggies) when I render it and hit play (it's superimposed over an image). Why is this? They are clean as a whistle in Photoshop, then pixelated when played in Final Cut.

Red is horrible in NTSC land. Try a different shade of red and maybe turning down the opacity a bit. See if that works. I've never had to use red titles and I hope never have to for that same reason, it looks bad on tv. Same goes for red clothes, red signs, etc. Maybe someone out there has a better solution?

Not only is red a problematic color for video, but DV compression isn't nice to gfx either. The font you are using might be adding to the problem too as some fonts are better for video than others.

I used some red in titles but had to pull back on the saturation quite a bit to keep it from bleeding. I used FCPs Color Corrector for this, not the 3-way Color Corrector.

What codec/compressor are you using for your sequence setting? The DV one is certainly a no-no. If you have picture lock and are only doing finishing, I'd save the red titles till absolutely last and then put them into an uncompressed timeline. Or perhaps use the animation codec if you have access to a raid and can output to digibeta, that would help the reds hold up a lot better I believe.

cheers.
