clean codecs?

I will soon be displaying my demo reel for my colleges portfolio review and am trying to find a codec that will give my reel the least amount of noise. All footage was shot on a HVX-200p and the footage tends to be a little noisy in dark areas. The real is in 720 24p and will be seen on a 30" Apple Cinema Display. As of right now the reel is in Apple Intermediate Codec and doesn't really look as good as I would like when in fulllscreen. Any suggestions?

If the noise is already in the source and your intermediate, then re-encoding it won't make the noise magically disappear. You would need to filter it with noise reduction filters before re-encoding it

As for format - h.264 has the best PSNR especially in terms of quality/bitrate ratio. But if size doesn't matter to you , you could just as easily render it out in Prores HQ to play.

Any thoughts on filters to use? I tried the noise reduction in Compressor but ended up losing a quite a bit of detail.

Sorry , I'm not a MAC guy. Maybe you could start a new topic on noise reduction filters on MAC platform

The choise of filter would depend on the type of noise. Different types of filters target specific types of noise. So if you posted examples and screenshots, chances are you would get more detailed replies an better help. If you were very picky you could even rotoscope or apply filters to sections of individual frames, so you don't lose detail in important areas.

I think Neat Video is available on the MAC for FCP. It's customizable for different types of noise, and quite good (at least the PC version)

You could also get a professional encoder to upscale it to your device's resolution for a good effect. Think of it as IMAX DMR where they upscale 2k footage to an 8K projection.

Check the signature for my information. I could encode you a sample and quote you a price.
