Claudio Miranda.. ASC?

I just watched Tron Legacy for the second time, not the most cinematic film I know, but still an enjoyable film if only for nostalgia's sake. Anyhow I was reading up on Claudio Miranda since I didn't know much about him and was surprised to see that he's only been an ASC member since '09, even though he lensed The Curious Case of Benjamin Button in '08 and a romcom for Paramount in '06. I'm wondering if he was just very talented and his reputation got ahead of his credentials, or perhaps it's not all that rare to have a non ASC cinematographer on a major film. Any thoughts?

It's not rare.

Being invited into the ASC is a process and sometimes a career can be very accomplished before the invite arrives. The ASC is a honorary society, not a Union.... and one of the requirements to get in is to have a respectable resume of accomplished works. So it makes sense that you'd need some big films under the belt first, and then you get in... especially if you are not super close with three members to attain recommendations, which is another requirement.

I also think Claudio's career path had something to do with it.
He came up through G&E and was gaffing some HUGE movies.
He hasn't actually been shooting for THAT long.

and he's been shooting high end commercials since at least 2004. that's when i first worked with him on a NetZero campaign. hes shot a few spots with David Fincher as well before shooting "Button" together.

Gotcha. Guess I've been taking those three little letters for granted. (I knew how hard it was to get into but I suppose I misunderstood it's purpose.)

Thank you guys, this is exactly what I was wondering.
