Classic Digital Cameras

As digital replaces film, and as digital matures, seems there will always be pros and cons to any given Camera setup.

so, that allows for some cameras to become classics, astrch will make them outdated, but good is good, and that is timeless.

still a bit early for classic digitals, but a few cameras tease at the idea.

first up would be the f35/genesis. That camera will always look good. The weight and size may be a burden, but stable inertia is the benefit.

As many faults as it has, the 1dc is pretty addictive camera. If you don't mind a little bulk, it goes everywhere, and shoots in almost any condition, and gives you plenty a nice image. Rolling shutter and 8bit hold it back, but it has juuuuust enough, that all can be forgive. I co sider this a camera you never have to get rid of, and also one that never has to leave your side.

alexa is a bit of a definitive digital camera. The camera that killed motion picture film. If the Amira gets the same iq, than i might lean towards that. The only downside is the ubiquity.

Red Dragon. Not going to mention the specs. You may find yourself obssesing over raw alchemy and color science, but if there is a digital camera that can go with you to the grave, this is the closest thing to it.

none of these cameras satisfy every camera need, there will always be something we need to be different. So, still looking for the next best thing.

There are many great cameras out there, but few of them i will care about 5years from now. I doubt i will care a out the Alexa in ten years, but it was the camera that reigned during the death of film, and so it has a place in history for that merit alone, but the Genesis is amazing from a timeline perspective and that kind of look will always be welcome. Dragon may not tick every aesthetic box on the chart, but such a beasty camera will never truly be outdated, but merely out done. The 1dc is just fun in the way a polaroid or 8mm is. Slightly anemic, but capable of timeless images. Whereas the 5d has a firmer place in a historical significance, it will fade like the varicam, dvx100, BMC, c300, redMX, and f900, which is the difference between historical and classic to me.

any cameras you guys/gals like? Some of the old vhs or betacam still look good to you? I suppose i forgot about the grunge aspect of old video cameras. As for the other top performers of our day, I think the f5, f55, and f65 are amazing. F65 is very drool worthy. But the sony cameras come out en mass and lose some of their would be appeal.

With every new camera that comes out, we are quick, and rightfully so, to point out what is wrong with cameras. But looking back, there are a few cameras that have enough pros to outweigh the cons. Ergonomics and function controls are probably the most incredulous misfires coming from manufacturers. But, looking back we can have rose colored glasses if we want, and there are a few cameras i am sure you love.

I would add the REDone MX to the list. As the standard moves to 4k and beyond the REDone MX stills sees action on set. I'm surprised I still see people using them. But the MX sensor is still a very good sensor to work with, whether or not its a scarlet, epic or REDone. That camera is the Sherman tank of cameras.
