clarity on the infamous tape issue

just wanted to clear up one or two things, and i see that jared land seems to know the issue well:

i will be using panasonic mq tapes for my 100a; it is a dry tape.

and though the sony dsr-11 calls for wet tapes, this will not pose a problem? is that right?

also, if i need to show my tape in a studio or classroom that will only accept sony tapes, it is easy enough to clone my video from a panasonic tape onto a sony tape, withot uno problemo. is that right?

thank you in advance. i cant tell you - yes i can - how helpful this forum has been. thanks to one and all

Re: clarity on the infamous tape issue

Depends on what you clone the tape with...

Basically, use one brand of tape in your units period. I use Sony tape in my DVX100A, DVC200, VX2000's and all decks. Why? Because for years I have been using it in all of the above + others. Switching to MQ just for my DVX did not make sense with my current workflow.

Re: clarity on the infamous tape issue

I've been using a friend's Sony TRV 900 with Sony tapes for the past couple of years (now I have piles of tapes). I just got my new DVX in yesterday.

Would I want to stick with buying Sony tapes to use with both cameras? Also, I shouldn't have any problems playing the Sony footage on my DVX, correct?

...waiting to de-virginize the DVX that's sitting at home, unopened.

hi filmgen

seems that all the tape information can indeed be baffling. but after having so much on sony tape, i would think it's not worthwhile to switch.

fortunately, what i have on my sony tapes are a bunch of school projects, so switching is not a big problem.

except - except - my decks at school have always used sony. and so i sit and scratch my head.

but the one agreement everyone has is to stick to one tape, and both sony and panasonic, all my gurus tell me, are both muy bueno.

Re: clarity on the infamous tape issue

I have the DSR-11 deck and it has many hours with the MQ tapes.. in fact thats the only tape it has ever seen. No problems so far (where's a piece of wood when I need it)

And in the classroom.. the good thing about the dsr-11 is its incredibly portable, so you can firewire out to thier decks if need be to show your work, that is if you decide to switch.

The only reason to keep using tapes other than that is that the sony tapes have chips in them.. if you have anything that records onto the chips then you may as well stick with the sony tapes.

I need to throw a q out there too. So I do have to order my stuff off the net as I cant get it localy. AY-DVM60 MQ is not getting me far in the searches. Panasonic site is more confusing than ever http://www.panasonic.com/business/provideo/cat_tape_media.asp as for other sites well the MQ seems to not appear. Some help pls. A UK source or European model number of tape might be the issue? What should I ask for?

it's AY-DVM63MQ, not 60. Go to evsonline.com for good prices... or just look at the top of many DVXUser pages for their MQ tape ad...

Re: clarity on the infamous tape issue

If you're not finding it by part number, also ask for Panasonic Master Series DV tapes. The MQ's are also known as Master Series.
