City of God

Runner Up.
Anyone seen this movie? It's AMAZING. The cinematography itself could tell it's own story.

The movie takes place in Brazil and goes through many stories of men involved in gangs and connected to one another. The acting was phenomenal considering all the kids that played the characters.

What's everyone elses thoughts on this?

Totally agree. I watched as someone on some thread (films all filmmakers should see?) mentioned it. The movie just blew me away. The camera work, color, and everything else. I was like whew! It was intense.

Yeah, I saw this awhile back, great cinematography, everything was great. It reminded me alittle of "Pixito" I think, about a boy growing up in a poor country and joining up with others to survive..I love movies like that.

One of my favorite movies ever. Good story, amazing cinematography and editing and a very interesting method of production. It was shot largely on location with Kodak's great new 16mm stock and edited in HD with a digital intermediate, I believe.

The unusual structure of the story (something of a fast-paced epic, I guess) and the use of music is stunning, too. Really an extraordinary movie. The use of nonprofessional actors and locations mimics the whole Neorealist movement, but the cinematography is right out of MTV, except grittier. No idea how I'd classify this movie in terms of style or storytelling....just stunning, though and stunningly original.

Great movie indeed; I bought the DVD. Perhaps y'all are not aware that the boy who starred in it was killed by gang violence (just like in the movie) a couple of years later.

I loved this movie. So "Real". Yeah JF, actually I did hear about that. I also thought I heard that all the kids were locals....any truth? Whether or not they were actors, they were all damn good.

Hi Hybrid:

Yep, they were locals and not professional actors. Pretty good job at directing talent, don't you think?

I learned all this from one of my TV school teachers, who met the director while he was studying in Mexico a few years back.
